Fractional CO₂ laser: aftercare and expectations

Information guide · Approximate reading time: 3 minutes

When you want to improve skin texture or the appearance of certain scars, recovery time matters as much as the aesthetic goal. At Makai, Skin Recode is our program for assessing fractional CO₂ laser. Before scheduling it, understand how it fits your skin and routine.

What does fractional mean?

Fractional laser treats microscopic areas of tissue in a pattern that leaves skin between them. CO₂ is an ablative laser used in skin renewal procedures. Intensity and the treated area affect aftercare and recovery; it is not a facial cleansing treatment or a procedure that is identical for every skin type.

Assessment determines suitability

The professional should review your skin type, reason for consultation and medical history. Report any tendency toward abnormal scarring, history of herpes, recent treatments or current medications. Do not stop medication without guidance. Some situations may require another approach or postponing the procedure.

Plan recovery before booking

Ask for a personalized estimate of how long redness, swelling or peeling may last. Duration varies with treatment. If you have a trip, outdoor work or an upcoming event, mention the dates. Choosing the right time also depends on your ability to follow aftercare.

Aftercare that should be clear

Ask for instructions on cleansing, permitted products, sun protection, makeup and returning to activities. Do not pick scabs or introduce exfoliants on your own. The team should explain which reactions are expected and which require contact or medical attention. Resurfacing risks include pigmentation changes, infection and scarring.

Results with realistic expectations

Improving a scar does not mean erasing it. Response may be gradual and, depending on the case, require more than one treatment or a combination of approaches. Agree on follow-up and a reasonable goal. Photos of other people cannot be used to promise the same change.

Prepare for your Skin Recode consultation

You can bring three notes: the area that concerns you, the treatments you have tried and how much recovery time you have. At Makai in Curridabat, we explain the proposed treatment, alternatives and costs before starting. The decision should consider both your desired result and the aftercare you can maintain.
